What is a Coach?

Good question!

The standard answer would be:

Coaching takes you from where you are now to where you want to be - faster than if you were working alone’

But I’d like to expand on that briefly.

Coaching is always future focused. Outcome driven. It is here that it differs from counselling and other similar therapies which focus on the past.

Coaching is about deciding what it is that you do want. Your goal if you like.

That can often be the hardest part of a coaching session because by nature we generally know what we don’t want. When we are asked what it is that we do want, it can feel quite challenging.

Think about it if you will. Are you able to identify what you do want easily?

Or do you switch quickly to the ‘don’t want's’ and notice how easily they roll off the tongue?!

Like the old saying goes ‘you get more of what you think about the most’. And it’s true.

Coaching will help you to get really clear on what you do want. And sometimes we are a bit fearful of our own goals. Please know that it is normal to feel afraid of your own ideas. It is the work of a coach to help you to break down your goals so that they feel right for you.

Coaching is also about being listened to. Like REALLY listened to! It’s about someone listening to what you want and supporting you to take the action that will move you forward.

It’s also about supporting you to work through the self-limiting beliefs and stories that you may have about what you can achieve.

But it is always future and action focused. Otherwise it’s just a bit of a natter and you can do that with a friend for free.

As a big action taker myself, my sessions will encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and I will be as challenging as is comfortable for you.

I will ask you questions. Lots of them. Questions that you won’t have asked yourself. Questions that help to shine a light on what it is that is preventing you from moving forward. They will make you think. And they will make you look at things in a different way. And they will make you think some more.

Coaching is about you taking action. No one else can do that for you. It’s about showing up and getting involved. Coaching empowers you to take the steps that are right for you. But only you can do that. And you can. Anyone can - providing they are willing to do so.

Coaching in isolation is not about giving advice. Advice is all well and good but we can get that from our friends too.

And you get to choose which coach you work with. Coaching is very much around fit and rapport. What works for you may not work for someone else. In the same way as any business relationship or service that you are paying for.

Coaching can often be confused with some of the other therapies and the thing to remember is that it is future focused. Where you want to go. How you will get there. It's all about the possibility. The can do's and will do's. And you making it happen.

Most importantly, as your coach it is my belief that you have it within you to bring about your own success.

Through 1-to-1 coaching sessions, we will explore what it is that you want and the steps that you need to take to get started. I will ask lots of questions! Questions that you may not have asked of yourself. It is through these questions that I invite you to look at things in different ways, from a different perspective and access your own solutions accordingly. I will invite you to look at old beliefs and the stories that you may be telling yourself about your abilities. I do not teach nor tell you how things should be done. And there is no judgement.
